We received a phone call from a lady in Warwickshire, she had been watching a badger cub for over 24 hours and there were no signs of any parents and the cub wasn’t moving around. She brought the cub to us.
The cub had been attacked by a dog or fox and wasn’t very well, she was only 3 weeks old. She had her vet check up and was put on antibiotics, unfortunately she had an allergic reaction to the drugs. She needed 24 hour care to help, but due to the reaction she lost all her fur.
Over the next few weeks she started getting better, her fur grew back and she was starting to fight fit.
A few days later we noticed she had a bald patch on her side and another coming on her back, she was losing her fur again (so we thought). Back to the vets again. It turned out that Humbug (as we named her) had a skin complaint and that all through her life she would lose patches of fur and possible could go completely bald again, and her immune system was really poor.
We made the decision to keep her at the sanctuary and give her the best life we possibly could, what came next was not to be expected.
We had problems getting her of the bottle and on to solids, we tried everything that a badger eats, dog food, cat food... Everything. Last resort was human food, we started with a bit of chicken but no good, cooked sausages.. No good. Raw sausage , chocolate spread sandwiches, pasties, pork pies YES YES YES. This was all she would eat, very fussy.
She was litter trained and loved playing with her toys, the dogs and Emma and Geoff. She was very attached to Emma and they were like the best of friends, Emma could do anything with her as seen by the photo’s. She was the best friend any one could ask for.
Then sadly in March 2008, Humbug took ill and in June 2008 she lost her life to a brain tumour. She is very sadly missed by us all.
